This morning I wore my brand new denim choker necklace and looked at myself in the mirror and thought, damn, I love how amazing this necklace looks.
No sooner did I think this, I turned and found my husband staring at me. “Hmm”, he silently said. “What?” I nudged, hoping to get a compliment from him. “Honey, why are you wearing a dog collar” he asked. Dog Collar? I scanned his face for a hint of sarcasm, but there was none. This was just a genuine case lack of knowledge for fashion trends!
The more I thought about it, I realised that my husband is not the only man who falls in this category. Sure, as women, we try to get in on the latest trend so that we can look great, fashionable and maybe even get a few compliments. However, do these trends always translate on to men the way we want them to?
For example, my dad to date asks me if I want him to buy me a new pair of jeans when I wear ripped jeans. These are just examples of the men in my life, however, I’m sure I’m not the only one.
In a recent interview I read, Camille Rowe said, New York women dress for other women, Parisian women dress for men, and it got me thinking, whom do I dress for? Am I a ‘dog collar’ loving liberated feminist who doesn’t care weather a man likes or hates my denim choker or am I a male-attention conscious, rational clothing conformist?
Well the truth is I’m probably somewhere in between. While I will continue to wear my chokers as I please, I will also choose my audience carefully going.
